Getting there
Getting up in the evening
How to get up to Hohensalzburg Fortress for an evening concert: the FestungsBahn funicular, the footpath, the Old Town approach and what the ticket allows.
Book the fortress concert ↗Quick answer
Walk or take public transport to Festungsgasse in the Old Town, where the FestungsBahn funicular leaves for the fortress. The ride takes about a minute, and the concert ticket covers the trip up and the trip down, with the ascent opening one hour before the concert. A footpath beside the lower station takes about 30 minutes and is steep, with steps.
The lower station
The funicular's lower station is on Festungsgasse in the Old Town. The booking page gives Festungsgasse 4 as the meeting point. The fortress's own page describes the way in from the central station: about a 20-minute walk to the Old Town, or a trolleybus to a stop near the Rathaus and then a short walk through the old streets. Cars cannot enter the Old Town, which the fortress calls a pedestrian zone.
By car, coach or from the airport
The fortress recommends leaving the car at a Park and Ride car park and taking public transport into town. It also lists garages under the Mönchsberg and at Nonntal. The same page describes the walk from the bus terminal to the funicular's lower station and the routes in from Salzburg Airport. Plan the return as well, because the ride down ends at the same lower station.
The ride itself
According to Wikipedia, the FestungsBahn opened in 1892 as a water-balance funicular and was rebuilt with an electric drive in 1960. It was modernised again in 2011, with new vehicles and panoramic windows. The fortress calls it the oldest funicular still operating in Austria and says it takes you up the hill in about a minute. Salzburg AG, the city's transport company, operates it.
What your ticket allows
The concert ticket includes the funicular ascent and descent. It lets you ride up from one hour before the concert and not earlier, so it cannot be used for an afternoon visit. The dinner version opens the ascent 30 minutes before the meal starts. At the top you still have a walk and some steps to the hall, and the Golden Hall has many steps and no lift, as the booking page states.
Walking up instead
The footpath starts right beside the lower station. The fortress puts it at about 30 minutes and warns that it is steep, has steps in places and is not suitable for baby carriages or for anyone who needs a barrier-free route. It is a choice for when you have time in hand. With a concert start approaching, the included funicular is the safer plan, and the ride down is there after the music.
When the funicular is closed
The funicular has maintenance periods during which the footpath is the only way up. The fortress's opening-hours page lists them, so check it before you fix your dates, and read your confirmation for any change to the concert. The start time and the hall appear once you choose a date.
After the concert
The ticket includes the ride down, and the lower station opens onto the Old Town, which is a pedestrian zone. You walk from the station to a restaurant, a hotel or a trolleybus stop. The fortress's own page lists the Old Town bus stops to use.
Who this isn't for
People who cannot manage stairs will find the concert hard going: it is listed as unsuitable for people with limited mobility, and the footpath is not barrier-free. The fortress offers barrier-free tours by day, which are a different product from this concert, and its accessibility page is the place to ask.
